Survey findings: Migrants, speak up!
ENAR conducted the online survey “Migrants: speak up!” with recently arrived migrants in five European Union countries: Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy and Sweden. We surveyed a total of 5,237 people who had migrated to these countries in the last five years, between 31 July and 7 November 2017.
Respondents were asked questions about their experiences of overall well-being, employment – including experiences of discrimination at work, crime, experiences with police, housing conditions, and integration programmes. The survey was available in English, French, Italian, Arabic, Turkish, Farsi, Somali, Urdu and Chinese.
The main focus of the research was to understand how much variation in quality of life indicators (e.g. experiencing discrimination in the workplace) can be explained by four key demographic variables: ethnicity; country of origin; country of residence; and legal status.
This survey begins to explore how ethnicity and nationality may impact on the life chances of migrants. It underlines the need for EU Member States to develop appropriate anti-discrimination policy responses in the areas of employment, housing and criminal justice, and to improve the effectiveness of integration programmes.
In the context of discussions on EU migration policies, the survey findings give a voice to the human beings behind the headlines and policies, to their experiences living in the EU.
