Press statement: ENAR condemns in the strongest possible terms the racist resolution proposed by the EPP and passed by the European Parliament today

Brussels, Belgium – 08/10/2026

ENAR condemns in the strongest possible terms the racist and Islamophobic resolution “on the need for an EU strategy to counter Islamist entryism and the influence of the Muslim Brotherhood network” proposed by the European People’s Party (EPP) and passed by the European Parliament today, including its targeting of ENAR and its members like FEMYSO through sham allegations and falsehoods seeking to associate our network with the Muslim Brotherhood. ENAR categorically rejects these claims.

This resolution is a stain on the European Parliament and marks a profoundly shameful day in Europe’s history. A Parliament that should defend democracy, equality and fundamental rights has instead given institutional legitimacy to a racist politics of suspicion that casts Muslim communities, Muslim-led civil society, organisations combating Islamophobia, and those who defend their rights as inherently suspect.

We equally deplore the deeply racist and Islamophobic rhetoric that characterised the parliamentary debate preceding this resolution. What unfolded amounted to a political witch-hunt targeting racialised people – particularly Muslim, migrant and refugee communities – as well as the organisations and representatives defending their rights. This discourse deliberately constructs fuels division, fear and suspicion with a logic that belongs squarely within the tradition of discredited far-right conspiracy theories such as the so-called “Great Replacement” theory.

For nearly three decades, ENAR and our members have worked to combat racism and discrimination and to defend equality, democracy and fundamental rights across Europe. This work is not contrary to European values: it advances the very principles upon which the European Union is founded. Article 2 of the Treaty on European Union places human dignity, democracy, equality, human rights, minority rights and non-discrimination among the Union’s foundational values. EU law further requires the Union to combat racial, ethnic and religious discrimination in its policies and prohibits discrimination on these grounds.

As we stated publicly on 3 July 2026, allegations associating ENAR with the Muslim Brotherhood are not only false, but we see their repetition as part of a wider pattern of defamation, exclusion and intimidation directed at anti-racist civil society and organisations challenging anti-Muslim racism. Today, those attacks have crossed a dangerous threshold: sham allegations and falsehoods targeting anti-racist civil society have been elevated into a resolution of the European Parliament.

ENAR has recently lost its EU structural funding. We do not assert that this decision resulted from these attacks. However, against this background, the European Parliament endorsing calls for ENAR to be excluded from EU funding and institutional spaces on the basis of sham allegations we categorically reject is exceptionally serious.

We will not be intimidated. We will not be silenced. ENAR will continue to expose and challenge racism, including anti-Muslim racism, wherever it occurs – including within Europe’s own institutions.

And we will continue to stand firmly alongside and support our members, including FEMYSO. Attempts to isolate, intimidate or silence individual members of our network will not divide us or weaken our collective commitment to racial justice.

History will judge what happened today. ENAR will remain on the side of equality, dignity and fundamental rights.

ENAR reserves all its rights in relation to false and defamatory allegations made against the organisation, its staff and its members.
