Joint Statement: The EU AI Act Must Limit Surveillance and Push Back on Big Tech Lobbying

The European Network Against Racism (ENAR) is joining 150 civil society organisations from across Europe in calling for stronger regulation in the EU Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act). To ensure the use of AI systems does not exacerbate structural inequalities, the act must put people and our fundamental rights first.

As EU institutions begin trilogue negotiations, we jointly call on them to:

  • Create a framework of accountability and transparency, and set up complaint procedures for possible infringements of rights.
  • Minimise harmful and discriminatory surveillance and profiling by national security, law enforcement and migration authorities.
  • Push back on Big Tech lobbying and financial interests to remove loopholes that undermine regulation.
