Intersectionality: Why EU policy makers should adopt an intersectional approach
On International Women’s Day, ENAR publishes a briefing on intersectionality and policy making on discrimination in the European Union.
Intersectionality shows how two or more forms of discrimination co-constitute and shape each other. The concept demands that we examine the various and intertwined power structures of our world, including racism, patriarchy, economic exploitation, and more.
This short briefing sheds light on the origin and current use of this concept. It explains why policy makers should adopt an intersectional approach, how it is relevant in EU policy making, and highlights some of the challenges in implementing intersectionality in policymaking.
