ENAR is recruiting a Communication and Press Officer

The Communication and Press Officer is in charge of developing, planning and implementing ENAR’s external communication and media strategy as well as strategic messaging. Deadline for applications: 1 November 2020.

ENAR is recruiting a Communication and Press Officer to join its team in Brussels.

The European Network Against Racism (ENAR aisbl) is the only pan-European anti-racism network that combines advocacy for racial equality and facilitating cooperation among civil society anti-racism actors in Europe. Our long-term vision is for a Europe where there is full equality, solidarity and well-being for all, citizens and residents. Our overall aim is to end structural racism in the European Union and to build structures, institutions and attitudes based on race equality and equal distribution of power, privileges and rights. Our staff is based in our Secretariat in Brussels and our member organisations work in all EU countries.

This is a full-time position based at the ENAR Secretariat in Brussels. The gross salary is € 3,159 per month, plus benefits. The contract offered is limited to one year, with potential for renewal.

Job description

The Communication and Press Officer (CPO) develops, plans, and implements ENAR’s external communication and media strategy as well as strategic messaging, jointly with the Digital Communication Officer (DCO) and in line with ENAR’s strategic objectives and priorities.

The CPO identifies communication and media opportunities and develops communication initiatives, as part of an integrated communications strategy, working in close collaboration with the DCO.

The CPO develops processes jointly with the DCO, and in close cooperation with Advocacy, Research and Network Development Officers, in order to ensure that ENAR’s communications contribute to achieving organisational objectives and ENAR’s visibility vis-à-vis the European Institutions and other relevant EU stakeholders.

The CPO leads on media relations, and is responsible for the editing, proofreading, layout and printing of all publications.

The CPO reports to the Director, but liaises actively with the DCO, the Advocacy and Research Officers, and the Network Development Officer.


1. Prepare, plan and implement innovative and effective communication strategies, jointly with the DCO
2. Design communication campaigns and develop effective narratives, messaging and creative ideas
3. Lead on media relations: develop media strategies, be the main media contact person, draft press releases and op-eds, develop relationships with key media outlets in Brussels and beyond, organise press briefings, maintain the journalist database
4. Proactive identification of media opportunities and management of reactive opportunities for ENAR
5. Support all ENAR staff in media related work, e.g. message development, interview preparation, development of coherent and common soundbites
3. Write, edit and proofread a variety of content
4. Manage the editing, layout and printing of all ENAR publications
5. Oversee the annual report publication
6. Manage ENAR’s blog: editorial planning, liaising with authors, editing and publishing content
7. Provide support on designing visuals when needed
8. Responsible for brand management and development
9. Monitor EU and national developments relevant for communication initiatives or for the ENAR network and member organisations
10. Coordinate a pool of volunteers working on media monitoring
11. Coordinate, where appropriate, European communication initiatives with national member organisations and other partners
12. Support in the management and maintenance of the ENAR Extranet
13. Monitor, analyse and report on effectiveness of communication and media work, in an effort to maximise results
14. Support in ensuring GDPR compliance of the organisation
15. Take on any task related to the post as deemed necessary and appropriate by the Director


Education and knowledge

1. Educated to university level and at least 2 years of experience in a similar position, or 5 years of relevant experience in a similar position - qualification or experience in public relations or communications is essential
2. Good understanding of the political debates related to anti-racism and equal rights in Europe
3. Understanding of the EU media landscape and press corps
4. Understanding of GDPR and data protection
5. Native level proficiency in English; knowledge of any other language is an asset


1. Proven track record in communication and media work
2. Proven ability and experience in designing and implementing Communication / Media / Campaigns strategies
3. Experience in communication campaigns targeting public authorities and decision makers is desirable
4. Experience in relationship and network building with journalists
5. Experience in editing and coordinating the production of publications
6. Experience in working in or with NGOs is highly desirable

Abilities and skills

1. Excellent writing skills and ability to be creative with language
2. Excellent capacity to communicate complex issues clearly and simply to a wide variety of audiences
3. Savvy of new developments in public relations/social networks and a willingness to take initiatives and test new approaches
4. Good ICT skills, including Office 365, CMS, Wordpress
5. Design, image and video editing skills (including Adobe Creative Suite) are a distinct advantage
6. Strong social and communication skills and ability to connect in an empathic way
7. Strong organisational skills
8. Proactive with ability to prioritise work and to work under tight deadlines
9. Ability to work in organisations operating in diverse political and cultural contexts
10. Collaborative team player
11. A strong commitment to ENAR’s mission and vision

Reporting duties

The Communication and Press Officer reports to the Director.

Line management

No line management duties beyond guiding an intern, if applicable.
