Symposium: Intersectionality: a tool for equality and justice in Europe

This European symposium was organised by the European Network Against Racism (ENAR) in partnership with the Center for Intersectional Justice (CIJ) on 3 October 2018 in Brussels.

Wednesday 3 October 2018, Brussels

This symposium was a unique opportunity to exchange with and learn from European academics and practitioners on intersectionality. This event aimed to be innovative, action-oriented and based on strong participatory methods to get the most of the collective expertise and intelligence.

Intersectionality has become an increasingly used concept in EU and national policy debates but there is still a gap between discourses and concrete application in policies, practices and legislation.

How can intersectionality be mobilised by activists and policy makers as a powerful tool for equality and solidarity? How can it be used to achieve more equality and justice for the most structurally disadvantaged, at the intersections of different grounds of discrimination – whether they are men*, women*, people of colour, LGBTQI*, people with disabilities, etc.? How can we ensure that equality laws and policies, and by extension anti-discrimination laws and policies impact all groups of people equally?

An intersectional approach to social justice and equality is absolutely essential to ensure no one is left behind and that all can access resources and contribute positively and equally to society.
